Why… the purpose
Puāwai is a nine month experience for approximately 40 rangatahi/young people aged 15-18 which is designed to:
Connect and develop a diverse network of “peers, innovators, disruptors, drivers” in our rangatahi/young people around the region to enable them to contribute to their community
Develop real skills, knowledge and networks by participating in a bicultural programme with a focus on diversity and inclusion
Who… our young people
There is no application process, instead small group/rōpū of 4-5 rangatahi/young people are nominated and supported to attend by a tuakana/youth group leader from their own community.
Puāwai is for young people who have already demonstrated their involvement within their whānau, friends and communities but are not yet recognised for their mahi/efforts. This would include young people who want to grow skills and experience and have not yet received leadership development opportunities.
Puāwai is focussed on inclusion of a diverse range of young people from Māori, Pasifika, Muslim, disability, rainbow communities etc
What… the programme
The Puāwai programme has been co-designed by a group of young people and includes;
Hui x one per month from 4.00-7.00 pm on a week day
Strengths finder profile and coaching - individual and group coaching with each rōpū
Rōpū meetings once a month
Activator events - youth-led practical projects in the April school holidays that could range from facilitating a public event to organising a service opportunity together
How… the supporters
Puāwai is part of www.lincproject.org.nz and is designed and delivered by a group of facilitators in partnership with Leadership Lab and the CHCH YMCA
Funding for Puāwai has been provided by the Ministry of Youth Development, Te Putahitanga, Wayne Francis Charitable Trust and the Ben Gough Family Foundation
In its first year Puāwai is an invitation only programme, with a focus on ensuring the development of it, such that it may be able to be offered on a wider scale at a later date

What is LinC?
Building communities through supporting local leaders.
The LinC Project started as a 10-month, strengths-based leadership programme for 40+ individuals from communities across Greater Christchurch in 2014. The second group began in December 2015, with 35 leaders from ‘community organisations’ and 10 leaders from Government organisations. In 2018 the LinC project becomes LinC Incubator, LinC Cultivator and Activator.
The intention of LinC is to support and sustain these leaders, their colleagues and their wider communities in the following three areas.
Supporting and Inspiring
The sharing of experiences, complemented by the input and mentoring of core people alongside, as your focus is defined and your flame kindled…
Initiating and Sustaining
As ideas are born and others reactivated, with renewed function and purpose, all set up to see them go the distance and you healthy and full of hope and optimism all the way!
Reflecting and Connecting
A huge focus on recognising what has gone before, and where we are at now and from week to week on the journey… Logical to start where people are at, but so often overlooked!
Why 'Leaders in Community'?
People thrive in communities, which thrive with leaders, who thrive with support.
Every one of us benefits from being part of communities where we feel a sense of belonging and contribution. These might be our physical communities, the streets where we live, our football club, culture group, church, fellow artists or surfing mates. These communities are the result of individuals within them showing initiative, hosting gatherings and organising initiatives….basically leading.
But what happens when these leaders get exhausted, over stretched and sometimes stop their quiet leadership roles? When these communities begin to fragment then each of us involved in that community also feel the impact.
LinC is about supporting and growing these leaders to keep them thriving, renewed and in the game.
Applications for Cultivator and Incubator closed on December 9, 2017. Feel free to contact us with any questions, or to stay in the loop about future opportunities.
LinC has had a significant impact on communities since 2015
